Tokunaga over the Swiss Alps
Our new website also features images taken by both photographers who are new to Aviation Images and well established contributors such as Katsu Tokunaga.
Katsu began his air to air photography career in a T-33A jet trainer, and has now flown over 1000 hours in the high-performance military jets of twenty-six nations, concentrating on his own unique choreographic style of air-to-air close formation photography.
He has art directed and taken official pictures for aircraft manufacturers, air forces and navies across the globe.
Recent work includes a shoot with The Swiss Air Force acrobatic flight team, “Patrouille Suisse.” Katsu had this to say on the challenges of working with the team, "Budget constraints have restricted their activities over the years, including limiting their training flights to just two weeks in March. The photographs of Patrouille Suisse were taken in between training sessions during those two weeks. The weather in Europe in early spring was not the most favorable, and I was denied the opportunity to take images of the aircraft against the snow-covered mountains of the Swiss Alps. But by going above the lower clouds that covered the ground surface and by using the high altitude light, I created a vivid contrast between the red and white Swiss colors of the aircraft and the deep blue skies."
